Matthew 5:15
nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
This powerful imagery highlights our calling to be a visible, active force of light in a dark world. Jesus is saying here that the lampstand gives light, it does its job, it does what its supposed to do. When we get saved we have a job to do, we are suppose to give light to the world around us. When Jesus says we’re the "light of the world," He’s inviting us to live in such a way that His light shines through us - illuminating our schools, jobs, homes, anfd lives with His light.
1. The Purpose of Light
Light is designed to be seen and to illuminate its surroundings. When Jesus describes His followers as light, He’s implying that we have a role that goes beyond self-preservation or hidden spirituality. We’re meant to engage with the world, bringing the presence of Jesus to every situation we enter. Like a lamp on a stand, our faith should not be hidden or downplayed, but rather shared openly and lovingly, allowing others to see God’s work in us.
2. A Call to Active Faith
Being light doesn’t mean forcing our beliefs onto others or living with a sense of superiority. Instead, it’s an invitation to a genuine, humble, and active faith that others can see. This kind of faith manifests in kindness, integrity, encouragement, and standing up for truth in love. It’s the kind of light that doesn’t need to be flashy to be noticed—it’s quietly, consistently present and powerful in its simplicity.
3. Lighting Up Dark Places
We’re called to bring light where it’s needed most—into the places that may feel bleak, empty, or heavy. In our schools, workplaces, communities, and families, we encounter people dealing with pain, uncertainty, and loss. Our calling is to be there, a steady source of love and truth that shines even in the darkest spaces. Through a kind word, a listening ear, or a compassionate heart, we can reveal God’s love to those who may not yet know Him.
4. Reflecting the Source
It’s essential to remember that our light doesn’t come from ourselves—it comes from Jesus. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we’re meant to reflect the light of Christ. When we stay close to Him, allowing Him to shape us, we’ll naturally become a brighter reflection of His presence. Spending time with God in prayer, reading His Word, and living in community with other believers are ways we can keep our "lamps" full, shining brighter with His love.
5. Illuminating Together
When we join with others in this calling, our collective light can transform entire communities. Together, as the body of Christ, we can be a radiant force for good that is difficult to ignore. When believers come together in unity, we create a light that can reach much farther than we could alone, showing others the beauty and hope of a life lived in Christ.
Conclusion: Embracing Our Role as Light
Jesus calls us to be intentional about sharing His light in a world that desperately needs it. May we embrace this calling to illuminate the world around us—not for our glory, but for His.
